Customs Clearance Becomes Safer and Faster with GS1 GLN Adoption
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency is conducting an innovative pilot project called EPoC (Evaluative Proof of Concept) in collaboration with brokers, importers, and exporters to demonstrate the feasibility of adopting the GS1 GLN (Global Location Number) as a unique Global Business Identifier (GBI).
This initiative, carried out in cooperation between GS1 and CBP, aims to deploy a single, standardized global identifier to enhance data quality and streamline the identification of shipments throughout the supply chain with a common international GS1 language.
By implementing the GS1 GLN as the unique identifier, the import process will be modernized, providing precise and reliable information that travels seamlessly along the entire supply chain. This improvement is expected to reduce customs clearance delays and enhance overall security.
What is GS1 GLN?
The GS1 GLN is a 13-digit unique code used to identify legal entities, physical locations such as warehouses, offices, production sites, and even digital addresses or functions within organizations. It is widely used for traceability, electronic data interchange (EDI), product catalog synchronization (GDSN), and even payment processing.
Pilot Participation and Benefits
GS1 Italy is collaborating with GS1 US on this pilot and is actively seeking companies exporting to the United States to join the initiative. Participants will share their GS1 GLN data with their U.S. importers to support the pilot’s objectives.
Companies interested in joining or needing assistance with their GS1 GLN registration are encouraged to contact GS1 Italy directly.
This project represents a key step toward harmonizing global trade processes by leveraging GS1 standards, ultimately accelerating customs operations, reducing errors, and increasing transparency in international logistics.
