GTIN and GDSN: The Passport for Selling Online
In the complex world of online commerce, having a unique and standardized product identity is crucial. The GS1 system provides this global passport for every item, company, channel, and market, ensuring seamless information sharing regardless of product location or movement.
At the Web-Ecom 2024 event in Bari, GS1 Italy experts Vanessa Giulieri and Nicolò Tenconi highlighted two fundamental GS1 standards: the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) and the Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN).
The GTIN — the EAN barcode’s unique numeric identifier — serves as an unchanging digital identity for any product internationally. This single number encompasses all pre-defined and dynamic product information, from size and color to brand data. Major marketplaces like Google and Amazon require GTINs for product listing, making it indispensable for effective online sales.
Complementing this, the GDSN is a global network standardized by GS1 that enables real-time synchronization of product information between sellers and marketplaces. By using a common language, GDSN prevents product data chaos — such as inconsistent, incomplete, or scattered product sheets — thus improving catalog accuracy and shopping experience. GS1 Italy’s Allineo service supports companies in streamlining this synchronization with minimal effort.
Adopting GTIN and GDSN standards offers multiple benefits throughout the supply chain and for consumers:
Simplifies reference management and global market entry
Enhances traceability and consumer trust
Reduces errors and duplications in product listings
Improves overall data quality and operational efficiency
In an era where e-commerce thrives on accuracy and transparency, GTIN and GDSN act as essential tools ensuring product information integrity. Their widespread adoption supports companies in meeting marketplace demands, optimizing supply chains, and enhancing customer satisfaction.
